Why I built Shaz does holidays

Twelve browser tabs, three spreadsheets and a budget that never quite added up. There had to be a better way to plan a holiday.

I've always been the holiday planner in our house. I love it: the daydreaming, the hunting for the right place to stay, the moment you find a flight for less than you expected. What I didn't love was how scattered it all was.

A typical trip meant flights in one tab, hotels in another, a car hire site, a map, a currency converter, and a spreadsheet trying to keep track of what it would all cost. By the time I'd added everything up, the price I'd found three days earlier had usually gone up.

The trip that changed things

In October 2025 we flew to Denver for twelve nights on the road through Colorado and Utah. Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Lake, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Colorado National Monument, three nights in Moab for Arches and Canyonlands, Hovenweep and Mesa Verde, Alamosa, then Colorado Springs before heading back to Denver.

Planning the route was the fun part. Everything else wasn't. Nine different places to stay, each booked on its own. Flights on one website and the hire car on another. Drive times guessed from maps, and a budget in my spreadsheet that never quite matched the confirmation emails.

Somewhere between booking the stays one at a time and working out the drive times, I realised I was spending more time keeping track of the trip than looking forward to it. That's when I knew we needed to do things differently.

I wanted one place, one budget, and a nudge when the price was right.

Budget first, then the fun part

I've learned that the best holidays start with an honest number. Not "where shall we go?" but "what can we spend?". So that's where the planner starts. You set your budget for travel and accommodation, and every choice after that is checked against it.

Then it does the tedious bits for you: finding the nearest airport to a beach resort with no airport of its own, working out whether it's cheaper to fly to Bangkok and take an internal flight, or how much fuel a weekend in a Cornish cottage will cost.

Never paying full price again

The feature I'm proudest of is the one I use most: deal alerts. Tell it the places you'd happily go and the most you'd pay. Every morning it checks the fares and compares each one with the usual price for that route.

When something genuinely drops, you hear about it, with a hotel idea for the same dates and a total for the whole trip. Not every cheap flight is a deal. These are.

My promise to you

  • The planner will always be free to use.
  • Deal alerts only flag fares that really are below the usual price.
  • Some links earn us a small commission. They're always marked, and they never cost you more.
  • We never sell your details, and you can unsubscribe from any email in one tap.

Built by holiday lovers, for holiday lovers

Shaz does holidays is everything I've learned about planning great trips without overpaying, put into one simple app. I hope it saves you as much time, money and stress as it saves me, and helps you get to more of the places on your list.

If you have an idea for making it better, I'd love to hear it. Every message comes straight to me.
